1. Why should I have a colonic?
Most of Britain should have a colonic! If you have lived on the typical western diet for most of your life, then you will have a certain amount of toxicity in your colon. White flour products, sugars and alcohol for example are not conducive to a clean environment in the colon and eventually it becomes impacted. Worms, fungi, mould, bad intestinal flora and parasites thrive in these conditions and contribute to absorbency problems, as well as impairing the ability of the good intestinal flora so they cease to make nutrients. Headaches, bloating, constipation, backaches, fatigue, bad breath, body odour, irritability, confusion, skin problems, abdominal gas, bloating, diarrhoea, sciatic pain can all be representative of intestinal toxicity.
Unfortunately toxicity is not limited to just the colon, once this becomes overloaded, toxic material is dumped throughout the body, particularly in fat tissue, joints, arteries, muscles, liver, etc. Colonics effectively eliminate large quantities of toxic waste from the colon enabling it to work more efficiently, which in turn affects the condition of the entire body.
2. Aren’t colonics just a fad?
On the contrary, colonics have been going since 1500 BC and descriptions of their
use are recorded in the Egyptian Ebers Papyrus. They were used in hospitals up until
recently before bowel procedures, but unfortunately costs dictated their demise.
Colonics in the UK remained a minority treatment until the mid-
3. What is colon hydrotherapy?
A safe and effective method of cleansing the colon of waste matter by gentle, repeated flushing of filtered, warm water.
The colon is often referred to as the large intestine and is responsible for ridding the body of waster matter and conserving water. It harbours your good intestinal flora, which make nutrients such as some of the B vitamins and vitamin K, if in good working order.
Colon hydrotherapy should never be painful. There may be a little cramping or gas as the colon muscles contract to expel considerable amounts of liquid and waste, but this is over very quickly and you will feel much better afterwards.
6. What are the benefits of colonics?
· The colon is cleansed of toxic material and even debris that has built up over a long period is eventually removed in the process of a series of treatments.
· The colon muscles are exercised and toned due to the gentle filling and re-
· The colon is returned to its natural shape once bulging pockets of trapped debris are removed resulting in a flatter stomach.
· Reflex Points are stimulated: Every system and organ of the body is connected to the colon by reflex points colonic stimulates these points, thereby affecting the corresponding body parts in a beneficial way.
7. Why do some hydrotherapists advise a colonic before and after foreign travel?
Many people come back from foreign countries with stomach bugs caused by worms or parasites which can create problems on and off for years afterwards. Creating a clean environment in the colon and boosting your intestinal flora with a good probiotic helps deter these organisms from setting up house in your bowels! It’s always a good idea to have a colonic before and after travel to sunnier climes.
8. Is there anything I need to do to prepare for a colonic?
Eat or drink lightly in the 2 hours immediately preceding a colonic. Also helpful, but not essential, emptying the rectum with a bowel movement just prior to the colonic saves time and permits more to be accomplished.
9. Doesn’t an enema or laxatives have the same effect?
Enemas cleanse the rectum but don’t reach any where near as far as the water from
a colonic. Laxatives can be addictive and if used on a regular basis will make the
bowel lazy -
10. How should I expect to feel afterwards?
This really depends on how toxic you are! Some people feel absolutely brilliant
following a colonic and report feeling lighter, cleaner and healthier whereas others
may feel light-
11. Will I suffer with diarrhoea or constipation after a colonic?
When the colon is sluggish, bowel movements may not return for a few days after one
colonic. This is perfectly natural and is an indication that extensive colon work
is needed to remove the debris that the bowel has built up over the years, once this
has been cleared, the bowel is given a chance to strengthen and heal. Build-
12. How can it help with constipation long term?
When the colon has been sluggish for quite a while, it becomes severely weakened due to being constantly bathed in toxic waste; it also stretches from holding excessive amounts of stool and is frequently constricted by chronic tension in the colon. Diet, exercise and disposition are three factors that must be in balance for the colon to function well. The process of colonic hydrotherapy is excellent for cleansing and healing the colon sufficiently so that changes in diet, exercise, and outlook are then able to produce their effects. Many people find the relief provided by colonics stimulates the motivation and enthusiasm to institute positive changes in their lifestyle.
13. What about intestinal flora and nutrients?
To function properly, the colon should be relatively clean, but unfortunately this
does not apply to most of us, because of our diet. Consequently, as the colon builds
up waste, this begins to ferment and putrefy, becoming a breeding ground for bad
bacteria. Cleansing the colon of waste will wash out both good and bad bacteria
but creates a more harmonious environment for the good guys in the long term because
they can only breed in clean surroundings. To help more quickly re-
14. How many colonics will I need?
It really depends on how impacted your colon is, and for most us it’s quite bad. The first colonic will start to remove some of the stagnant waste but subsequent treatments will remove more. It really depends on your personal objectives or whether you are suffering from an illness as to how many you need and is best discussed with your therapist. Once you have reached maintenance level, the changing of every season is a good time to have a colonic.
15. I have heard it has good effects on the skin?
Most people report having a clearer, brighter skin the day after a colonic. Your skin, along with the colon, kidneys and lungs is an important organ of elimination. Once the digestive system becomes overloaded, the liver backs up and can’t detoxify properly which puts pressure on the kidneys and once they become overloaded it’s left to the skin to take on some of the work. Many surface eruptions on the skin are because of toxic overload. Once the colon is cleansed, this in turn helps the other organs, including the skin.
16. Can I eat after a colonic?
Leave approximately an hour after having your colonic and then choose soothing foods that are easy on the digestive system. A vegetable juice or soups are good choices and will provide a massive shot of easily assimilated nutrients. Whatever you eat, make sure it is full of goodness. You wouldn’t run your car through mud once it has been cleaned, would you?
17. Are there any circumstances under which a colonic should not be performed?
Conditions such as active infections, active inflammation (such as diverticulitis, Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis), a painful fissure or painful haemorrhoids mean treatment cannot be comfortably carried out until they are healed or in remission.
Diseases such as congestive heart disease, severe uncontrolled hypertension, severe
anaemia, liver cirrhosis, kidney disease, severe haemorrhaging and colo-
Although it is acceptable to have a colonic after the first trimester, IHW does not perform treatments during pregnancy.
