How Multiple Sclerosis influenced Inside Health Works
Denise was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis in December 2003 at the age of 43 and
since then has embarked on an incredible journey to discover exactly why this most
frightening and debilitating condition could happen to her. As a keep-
I have been interested in nutrition since 1983 when I read a book by Lesley Kenton called the Joy of Beauty – I was 23 at the time. This fired a passion which will be with me for the rest of my life. I have read 100’s of books on nutrition since then and have always been aware that the food you consume has a direct affect on your health. The knowledge I have gained over the years has made me very careful about what I eat and I have always tried to consume fresh, unprocessed foods wherever possible. I was a vegetarian at 21 years old and remained so until I was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis in December 2003. I was astounded and baffled at my diagnosis because I thought I was such a healthy individual.
Extreme disease calls for extreme measures and although the neurologist I saw was
brilliant at diagnosing me (based on my symptoms and an MRI scan) there was no further
support except the offer of steroids. The theories I subsequently presented with
regard to diet were all blasted and I was told to be wary of all the anecdotal stories
out there on the Internet I then read a book called the Multiple Sclerosis Diet
Book by Roy Swank and at that point thought my life was over because the diet recommended
was the one I had been practising for over 20 years – basically no red meat, low
fat and lots of fresh fruit, vegetables and whole-
I spent a whole year being taught medicine, anatomy and physiology by Dr Neil Slade, a famous and much revered homeopath, and studied naturopathic nutrition over the following 2 years where I was taught by a number of lecturers, all leaders in their own fields. Particularly impressive was Lucille Leader who lectures in Parkinson's disease and MS
I have chosen the naturopathic route quite simply because I believe the body has
an inherent ability to cure itself when given the right raw materials. I have seen

Fully recovered, I am now thankful for what I have been through, because it led me onto the path I should have been travelling a long time ago.

How we abuse our bodies before we’ve even set off for work!
Your body is the most amazing piece of equipment you will ever own but unfortunately
it is rarely treated with the respect it deserves. Indeed it is subjected to a daily
barrage of abuse, not only from the substances we eat and drink but also from environmental
factors such as the air we breathe, right down to the perfume, aftershave and deodorant
we apply each morning. Aluminium, found in many deodorants, is linked to Alzheimer’s
and cosmetic preservatives such as parabens may play a role in explaining why sperm
counts have been falling in men and breast cancer in women is on the rise. Many

Are you in a State of Toxic Overload?
The belief of IHW is that all forms of disease begin with the accumulation of waste material in the body and once toxic overload is reached (where more toxins are taken on board than can be eliminated) then problems begin. So why don’t we all get the same disease? Each person is unique and the factors contributing to toxic overload (and therefore health problems) in one person may be completely different to those in someone else, even with exactly the same symptoms. Multiple Sclerosis is a prime example of this. In naturopathic circles there is a belief that heavy metal toxicity (eg mercury fillings, aluminium) can cause the symptoms that present as MS, which is a sound and agreeable theory, but why, then, are there millions of people walking around with a mouth full of amalgams who will never suffer from MS, or people with MS who have no amalgams? Quite simply, we all lead different lifestyles and no one factor should be isolated, but looked at as part of the bigger picture. For example, did the person with MS and mercury fillings have glandular fever when younger; take many antibiotics; drink alcohol or have a sugar laden diet etc? At IHW every about you is taken into account to get to the root cause of the problems that contributed to your toxic overload.
Denise says: I have many clients on my books, all of whom have benefited from nutritional therapy. Some of these people have had to make big changes to their lifestyles, while others just required a few tweaks to their diet along with the support of minimal supplementation. Overall, each person I see agrees that it was all worth it.
The body has an inherent ability to cure itself, given the right tools and a chance. IHW can give you the right tools, but it’s up to you to give it that chance.
Can cholesterol lowering drugs cause heart attacks? Our principles get to the Root of the Problem
Inside Health Works focus on a naturopathic approach towards health, and our beliefs
are that even the most severe of health issues can be overcome with good nutrition,
tailored supplementation, colonic's, cleansing, detoxification and exercise. Denise
emphasises that there is no magic bullet and taking control of your own health and
helping your body to heal itself requires hard work, discipline and patience. Orthodox
medicine has its place but a lot of the time only serves to mask issues and can unfortunately
bring a whole host of new problems. Let’s take the example of statins which are
prescribed to lower cholesterol. Statins block a biochemical pathway in the liver
that makes cholesterol (which is required for many functions) and also Coenzyme Q10,
which is involved in producing energy for all major muscles, including the heart,
which uses huge amounts. It is well documented that the severity of heart failure
is correlated with low levels of CoQ10. People on this medication might have perfect
cholesterol levels but what about heart attacks? It is the principle of IHW to look
at the whole body, as well as the existing problem, to get to the root of the cause.
At Inside Health Works we would look for clues as to what caused the high cholesterol
in the first place, and then set about lowering it naturally with the temporary use
of supplements and a permanently healthy lifestyle -
